How To Make Coconut Macaroons

Making macaroons is a delightful process that brings a taste of sweetness to your kitchen. I’ve always enjoyed the chewy texture and rich coconut flavor of these treats, and they’re surprisingly simple to whip up.

With just a few ingredients, you can create a batch that’s perfect for snacking or sharing. In this post, I’ll guide you through the steps to make your own macaroons at home, ensuring you achieve that perfect balance of crisp exterior and soft interior.

Ingredients

  • 2 and 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: melted chocolate for dipping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Heat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Put parchment paper on two baking sheets.
  2. Mix Coconut Mixture: In a medium bowl, mix together the shredded coconut, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla extract. Stir until all the coconut is covered.
  3. Whip Egg Whites: In another bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the egg whites and salt until they form stiff peaks. This means that when you lift the beaters out, the peaks should stay standing up and not fall over.
  4. Combine Mixtures: Carefully fold the whipped egg whites into the coconut mixture until they’re blended. Try not to deflate the egg whites too much..
  5. Shape the Macaroons: Scoop out big spoonfuls of the mixture using a mini ice cream scoop or two spoons, and drop them onto the prepared baking sheets. Keep them about 1 inch apart..
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes, or until the bottoms and edges are deeply golden and the tops are lightly golden.
  7. Cool: Allow the macaroons to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before moving them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Optional Chocolate Dip: If you’d like, you can melt some chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl or using a double boiler. Once melted, dip the bottoms of the cooled macaroons into the chocolate, then return them to the lined baking sheets. Place them in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to allow the chocolate to set..
